Standards & Guidelines

Appalachian State University is committed to implementing and adhering to standards as it relates to web sites and services. By following web standards, Appalachian is ensuring better interoperability between applications and systems, thereby providing better service to the campus and public consumers of its web services and content.

What does this mean for me?

Webmasters for campus colleges, departments and organizations should consult all relevant documentation and resources on web standards and accessibility as it applies to his or her web site or web application before making changes or implementing new features. Training and consultation is available from Learning Technology Services and the Webmaster's Office as it relates to web publishing standards and accessibility issues at Appalachian State University.

Web consumers (users) should expect the highest quality of web service from Appalachian. Web sites and applications that fail to validate on code or other issues should be reported to the responsible group. Where the responsible group is unknown for a site or application, please contact the University Webmaster's Office.

How about accessibility?

In addition to web standards, Appalachian is obligated to make its web services available to disabled users. For most static web pages and content, making the information accessible is the direct responsibility of the webmaster or content maintainer for that site, and may involve additional work when generating and publishing web content.

Web applications must also meet all required accessibility laws and regulations. Where web sites and applications cannot be made compliant through traditional editing and modification, an assistive tool, such as Lift Text Transcoder, or alternate version, such as a text -only page, should be provided to allow the user access to the content or application.
